4/8/2014 2 Comments On the Trouble With BloggingYesterday I wrote about the goals I have set for my writing career.
Editing the novel is coming along. It’s not going quite as fast as I’d hoped, but it’s getting there. I’ll write more about that later. I’ve managed to keep to my one story a week rate. It’s not been easy, especially with my travel schedule for work. I’m a little concerned that at this pace, I’m not able to let the stories simmer as long as I’d like, and I’m not editing them as much as I’d like. There’s no point in pushing out work to build a readership, if the work isn’t any good. I’d be curious if anyone has feedback on the stories so far. They’re intended to be vignettes, not everyone has a particularly satisfying plot arc, I realize. Then again, I tried to make them short. I suspect, from my readership analytics, that folks aren’t reading them quite as much as I’d hoped, but I’m going to keep writing them and hoping that changes over time. Also, I feel a bit guilty that I’ve been spending more time writing new stories than editing the novel. That seems like a backward prioritization. The big thing that has fallen off is blogging. This doesn’t surprise me. For one thing, I’ve never really settled on the topic of this blog. Is it about writing? Is it trying to intentionally be funny? Is it just pushing out content for content’s sake? Is it just a vehicle for documenting my progress and holding short stories? Also, drafting quality blog posts is hard. Coming up with an idea, trying to think of something original to say about it, scouring the internet for useful backup research and links, finding art, editing, rewriting. When the blogging is taking more time than the short story writing or the novel editing, that’s a problem. I have been tempted to stop doing the blogging entirely, except for one thing. People seem to read the blog posts about 10 times more than they read the stories. So, if my goal is to build readership, there seems to be one thing working, and that’s the blogging. So, I think I’ve come up with a solution to this dilemma. I’m going to try, as much as possible, to blog about the process of writing. To do so, I’m going to report, daily, on my progress in writing. It may be one sentence. It may be the same sentence every day for a week. Who knows? I think that, once I start writing the blog posts, things may start to flow from there. If I’m spending more time blogging than writing and editing, I may have to recalibrate. One thing I’ve been worried about is letting this website become just navel gazing. Me just muttering dull comments to myself within earshot of a few friends who happen to wander by. But then I remembered something. I’m witty. So, I’m going to try to go this route, and see how it’s going. Feel free to post thoughts in the comments, words of encouragement, or comments on any of the stories. Thanks!
