Exciting day today, my editor, Pat Goudey O'Brien, just sent me a seven-page report analyzing my novel and offering suggestions as to how I can improve it. I'm looking forward to reading this over the next few days, meeting with her next week, and then getting down to the dirty work of editing this thing.
I have shown this novel to maybe a dozen people so far. The responses have always been very positive. These people are all my friends, so obviously they've pulled their punches a little, but my friends tend to have no problem being brutally honest with me, so I trust that if they say it's good, it's good. So, I am excited to have a neutral professional look this over and provide comments. And I know that I'm going to have to cut out large chunks (probably large amounts of the first 60 pages will be tossed or seriously re-jiggered) in order to make this a sleeker, more compelling work. The book currently clocks in at 356 pages. I wonder what it will look like when I'm finished.
